Who is JANA?

Ian is our Chief Executive officer. That involves him managing JANA’s commercial interests and the day to day operations of the firm. Ian continues to manage a number of client advisory relationships, and he was formerly the head of our Global Equities research team.

Before joining JANA in 2002, Ian was a Principal at Mercer Human Resource Consulting in Sydney. Previously, Ian worked for Alexander Forbes in Johannesburg.

Ian holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He qualified as a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries (Edinburgh) in 1991, and is also a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Ian is a CFA charter holder.

Ken is Head of Investment Outcomes and Chair of the Board of Directors of JANA. That involves him focussing on the delivery of superior investment returns for clients, particularly the next wave of investment opportunities and how good investment ideas can be implemented effectively.

Ken was JANA’s Managing Director from 1995 to 2008. Before joining JANA, he held the position of Director of Finance for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, and has held a number of positions, including CEO within that organisation. He has specialised in financial markets and corporate strategy for over 30 years and has been intensively involved in investments for superannuation funds since 1986.

Ken has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Melbourne, and a Masters of Economics (Econometrics) from Monash University.

David is Head of Consulting in Melbourne. This involves overseeing the advice that JANA gives to clients. He is also a member of the Australian Equities research team.

Prior to joining JANA in 1999, he was CEO/MD at both National Financial Management (NFM) and National Australia Trustees. He was also concurrently a Director of the National Australia Bank Staff Superannuation Fund and Chairman of the Investment Committees for both the fund and for NFM's retail investment master trusts.

David holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Melbourne, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Business and a Diploma in Superannuation Management. He also holds a Diploma of Financial Planning. David was a Director of ASFA from 1996-2007.

John is Head of Consulting in Sydney. This involves overseeing the advice that JANA gives to clients. He is also a member of the Global and Australian equities research teams. John is JANA longest serving employee having joined the firm in 1988.

Prior to joining JANA, his experience included ten years at the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), where he worked in the superannuation, treasury and accounting areas. At the SECV Superannuation Fund, John was involved in the internal management of Australian equities and bonds.

John holds a Diploma of Business Studies from Footscray Institute of Technology and is a qualified accountant.

Jim is our Head Investment Solutions. Jim has overall responsibility for the JANA investment platform, including performance and manager appointments and terminations. This role focuses on ensuring the "best ideas" from the JANA research teams are being made available via multi manager investment solutions to our clients. Jim is a member of the senior management team.

Prior to joining JANA in 2002, Jim was the Treasurer for SPI Powernet.

Jim holds a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University and a Masters of Applied Finance from Macquarie University.

Steven is our Head of Investment Research. That involves the management of JANA's research programme and to undertaking general manager research and specific research projects. He is also head of JANA’s Absolute return research team.

Prior to joining JANA in October 1998, he was a consultant at Macquarie Bank. There he was primarily involved in establishing the investment advisory practice in the Melbourne office for a high net worth individual client base. Between 1993 and 1997, Steven was employed with master trust manager Wilson Dilworth Limited.

Steven holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Honours in Economics from the University of Melbourne, a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australia, a Graduate Diploma in Accounting from Monash University and a Masters degree in Applied Finance from Macquarie University.

Robert is our Head of Unlisted Investments. That involves him leading JANA’s capability in the analysis of unlisted investments for our funds. He also leads JANA’s private equity research and direct investments team and is a member of the Infrastructure research team.

Prior to joining JANA in June 2006, his most recent role was Head of North America for Commonwealth Bank of Australia, based in New York. He has over 20 years’ experience in project and structured financing at Commonwealth Bank and, before that, at Barclays Bank, in Sydney, New York and Hong Kong.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics), Master of Commerce (Finance & Accounting) and a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, from the University of NSW.

Brendan is a Divisional Director with JANA & has responsibility for its business development & marketing division. Additionally as part of his leadership role in the firm he has a specific focus on business strategy.

Before joining JANA in 2010, Brendan spent 29 years at Bank of Ireland Asset Management (“BIAM”) Limited. Brendan held numerous senior roles at BIAM in Ireland, Australia & the U.S., his most recent position being Director & Head of International Distribution and President of BIAM (US) Ltd.

Brendan holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Dublin City University, Ireland.

Ashleigh is Head of Operations. Her brief includes managing the internal business requirements, including IT, HR and Finance. In addition, Ashleigh provides technical input on issues of governance and regulation.

Prior to joining JANA in Nov 2006, Ashleigh acted as JANA’s legal counsel for over 3 years in her capacity as Senior Legal Counsel within the MLC group.

Prior to joining MLC, Ashleigh worked as a lawyer in Hong Kong focusing on the establishment and regulation of mutual (hedge) funds and other investment structures for clients in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Ashleigh started her career in 1998 at Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Sydney.

Ashleigh qualified with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws (Hons 1), from Macquarie University. Ashleigh has also completed a number of subjects with the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Nicole is our Head of Business Development. She is responsible for all new business activities at JANA, including JANA’s Investment Advisory Services, Implemented Consulting Solutions and Product Solutions. Her brief also includes management of all tender consultant relationships and she is involved in a number of strategic business initiatives.

Prior to joining JANA in March 2003, Nicole worked with Barclays Global Investors for five years. There she was involved in business development within the industry funds, corporate funds and fund-of-funds master trust sectors. She was also involved in managing Barclays Global Investors' client and investment consulting relationships. Preceding BGI, she spent two years at Macquarie Bank in the Institutional Funds Division.

Nicole holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Marketing and Finance from the University of Sydney.

Anna is the Head of the Australasian Equities research team. Anna joined the Melbourne office of JANA in September 1998 and transferred to the Sydney office in December 2000.

Anna holds a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree with double first class honours from Monash University, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.

Aidan holds a Bachelor of Business from Swinburne University, and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Michael is head of JANA’s Global Equities Research Team and also provides investment consulting advice to clients based in NSW and Queensland.

Prior to joining JANA in October 2007 he held the position of Portfolio Manager World Equities with Suncorp Investment Management (SIM) for a period of five years. Prior to assuming this role, Michael held a number of positions within the Wealth Management arm of the Suncorp-Metway Group, including Research Manager (external funds), Manager Research & Technical Strategies and Product Manager (retail unit trusts).

Michael holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Queensland and a Master of Applied Finance degree from Macquarie University. He is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA).

Rhonda is Co-Head of the Property Research Team where she is responsible for JANA’s advice on property strategy, manager selection and market research.  Rhonda also has input into the Direct Investment research team, specifically where such opportunities relate to property. 

Prior to joining JANA in January 2000, Rhonda worked in the Melbourne office of urbisJHD, as a property consultant and valuer for seven years. At urbis, Rhonda's responsibilities included property investment advice and valuations for a wide range of purposes including acquisition, divestment, market analysis, rent reviews and tenant accommodation strategies.

Rhonda holds a Bachelor of Business (Property) from RMIT University and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Mary is a Principal Consultant and Co-Head of the Property Research Team.

Before re-joining JANA in February 2010, Mary worked at Warakirri Asset Management for 9.5 years in various roles which included Head of Portfolio Management, Head of Research and Head of Marketing, Charities.

Prior to Warakirri, Mary spent six years at JANA Investment Advisers focussing primarily on Property research including unlisted and listed investment opportunities. In addition Mary held a number of Superannuation and Charitable client responsibilities as well researching Development Capital and advising on direct investments.

Mary holds a Bachelor of Business with Distinction (Property) from RMIT University and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Evan is the head of JANA’s Portfolio Construction research team.

James is Head of our Fixed Interest Research Team, and is also a member of our Private Equity and Portfolio Construction Research teams.

Prior to joining JANA in 2007, James spent 2 years as an economist with the NAB economics team.  James also spent several years as an economic adviser to the Australian Government within the Department of the Treasury and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

James holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Honours, Economics) and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Melbourne.

Jim is our Head of Infrastructure Research Team. This involves him in managing research into this asset class. Jim is the primary point of contact with JANA’s Western Australian Clients.

Prior to joining JANA in January 1998, he worked at the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance, starting in December 1975. He was primarily involved in budget operations and was an Assistant Director in the Budget Strategy and Management Branch. In his later years at the Department, Jim was also responsible for the preparation, implementation and supervision of the Victorian Government's guidelines for the funding of non-government organisations.

Jim holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Melbourne.

Neil is an Investment Consultant and Head of the Quantitative Systems Team, which provides quantitative research and analysis that dovetails with the qualitative research produced by other JANA teams. Neil is also a member of JANA’s Private Equity and Global Equities Research Teams.

Prior to joining JANA in May 2008, Neil was an Analyst with the Alternative Assets & Strategies Team at Russell Investment Group, where he was primarily involved in the research of private equity, venture capital and infrastructure investments. Neil also has a background in IT Operations and Management, and Electronic Engineering.

Neil holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Elec) from Melbourne University and an MBA from RMIT University, Melbourne. He is currently completing a Diploma in Share Investments in his spare time.

Mike is a Principal with the JANA Implemented Consulting Team responsible for the maintenance and development of the JANA investment platform which delivers multi manager solutions to our clients. Mike is also JANA’s Head of Implementation Services Research Team.

Prior to joining JANA in August 2008, Mike was the National Leader of Standalone Operations for Mercer with the responsibility for 180 staff providing superannuation and insurance services to corporate superannuation clients. In prior roles Mike was Head of Client Services at National Financial Management (NFM) and the Fund Secretary for the ICI and Associated Companies Superannuation Fund.

Mike holds the degrees of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and, Bachelor of Economics from Monash University, as well as a Diploma of Superannuation Management, Diploma of Financial Planning and a Diploma of Education.

Greg’s current role includes the provision of investment and administration advice to superannuation funds. He is also the Head of Custody and a member of the Quantitative Systems team. Greg joined JANA in September 1998.

Greg holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree and a Doctorate in Theoretical Physics, both from the University of Melbourne.

Maria is responsible for JANA’s business support team, providing a broad range of operational services to JANA consultants and clients. 

Prior to joining JANA in April 2002, Maria worked with Southcorp Limited, where she managed all operational aspects of the in-house Superannuation Department. In addition, Maria held roles as Fund Secretary and member communications facilitator, preparing and delivering member education programs at Company sites.

Maria holds a Diploma of Superannuation Management, through the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), and a Diploma of Investment Markets through the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA). Maria has been an active peer trainer for professionals in the superannuation industry through her work with ASFA.

Michael is the portfolio manager of the JANA TriplePoint Fund and is a member of the Alternative Investment Solutions’ Committee. Previously, Michael was the head of JANA’s Absolute Return Research (hedge fund) Team for four years. Michael joined JANA in February 2001 and has held a number of consulting and research roles. More recently he has been instrumental in the development of the Alternative Investment Solutions group.

Prior to JANA, Michael held a variety of positions at UBS, Morgan Stanley and Barclays Capital in both Australia and the United Kingdom.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance), with distinction, from RMIT University. He was awarded a John Storey Scholarship to undertake an international exchange program to Sweden, where he completed his degree at the Jönköping International Business School.

Aidan is a Principal Consultant primarily working with JANA’s Implemented Consulting clients.  Aidan’s research responsibilities are focused on ensuring JANA’s best ideas are reflected in our Implemented Consulting solutions.  Prior to his current role, Aidan headed JANA’s Australian Equities Research Team from 2006 to 2010 and held a senior consulting role with one of Australia’s largest industry funds.

Before joining JANA in 2003, Aidan spent 12 months working and travelling in Europe. During that time he worked in the Insurance area for Zurich, and then Barclays Bank in various roles. In 1997 he began his career at National Financial Management (NFM) as part of their graduate program. 

Aidan holds a Bachelor of Business from Swinburne University, and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Financial Services Institute of Australia.

Robert is in involved in our research teams, focusing on the Absolute Return team. He began consulting to JANA in 1996 and formally became employed in January 1997.

His experience with investments began with project analysis and financial modelling in the early 1980’s and he has been actively involved with superannuation investment since 1989.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Economics, a Graduate Diploma of Accounting, a Graduate Diploma of Computing, and a Diploma of Superannuation Management. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

Duncan is a former Head of our Property research team. Duncan retains research responsibilities within Property but is also a senior member of the Australian Equities research team.

Before joining JANA in 2007, Duncan spent 12 years with NAB Superannuation Fund, most recently as Assistant Fund Secretary/Finance Manager, responsible for the Investment Function of the Fund. The role included managing a direct property portfolio, this included acquisition, and disposal recommendations and implementation, and general portfolio management. Duncan has held positions on the NAB Superannuation Fund Investment Committee, Investor Review Board for Lend Lease APPF Funds, advisory committees for AMP Infrastructure funds and the Investor Committee for Telstra Dome.

Eric’s main responsibilities are for portfolio construction on the JANA Implemented Consulting investment platform.

Before joining JANA in 2001, Eric spent 8 years in Stockholm in the debt capital markets division of Enskilda, the investment banking arm of major Swedish financial institution SEB.

Eric holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) and a Master of Economics from Monash University.
